The Dufour 41 is an icon of the Dufour range, combining performance and comfort, the brand’s hallmarks. This internationally recognized and award-winning sailboat has won over both the press and owners. In this video, discover the behind-the-scenes story of its design with the architects and designers.
The Dufour 41 , which combines performance, elegance and innovation , is the fruit of a collaboration between the Dufour teams with Lucas Ardizio, interior designer, and Umberto Felci, naval architect.
To find out more, let’s retrace an interview between expert navigator Nicolas Bérenger and Sébastien Lucas, Project Manager of the Dufour 41 .
The Dufour 41 is more than an addition to the Dufour range ; it’s a thoughtful evolution of its predecessors. ” We started from the old Dufour range, ” explains Nicolas Bérenger. ” It’s not a completely new boat, but rather a true product of the brand, with all the Dufour DNA. We tried to enlarge the boat while keeping the same dimensions, widening the hull and asking the design team to rethink their approach. “
The result is a boat that is fully in keeping with Dufour’s tradition and DNA, while also offering significant innovations . This sailboat aims to offer a more expansive and comfortable sailing experience without compromising on performance at sea: intuitive sailing . This is a commitment that is perpetuated and renewed across all models in the range.
The Dufour 41 made its official debut in February 2023, leaving the shipyard and being launched the following March. Its world premiere took place at the Cannes Yachting Festival, a crucial moment during which it underwent rigorous testing in various sea and wind conditions.
“ We tested the boat in all sea and wind conditions and shared this experience with the entire shipyard team, ” explains Sébastien Lucas. “ The reception was very positive . At Cannes, we received nominations in several categories and won our first award at the Genoa Boat Show for design. ”
These awards testify not only to the technical success of the Dufour 41, but also to its recognition within the international nautical community.
The Dufour 41 stands out for its maritime performance . “ It is a well-balanced, safe, and easy-to-handle boat that can be handled both solo and with a crew, ” says Sébastien Lucas. This sailboat is designed to be accessible while offering high-level performance. The cockpit design and the layout of all the equipment are designed to allow easy and intuitive access , whether you are an experienced skipper or a beginner.
A particularly memorable moment for the team occurred during testing in Palma de Mallorca. “ We found ourselves in the middle of a J Class regatta, ” says Sébastien Lucas. “ Even though we weren’t directly competing, it was impressive to see the boat maintain its rank among these giants of the sea. ”
The creation of the Dufour 41 is the result of a two-year development process , which closely involved all of Dufour’s teams as well as external collaborators such as naval architect Umberto Felci and interior designer Luca Ardizio. Together, they worked to create a boat that embodies the brand’s values while incorporating the innovations that are Dufour’s strength.
” It was a matter of preserving the Dufour DNA—a seaworthy, high-performance boat—while combining it with a generous hull, ” explains Sébastien Lucas. The mast placement, distribution of volumes, and ease of maneuvering were all carefully considered to optimize performance and comfort.
Luca Ardizio, head of interior design, brought his personal touch, balancing simplicity, functionality, and aesthetics. ” The collaboration was very enriching, based on sharing ideas to find the best possible compromise while also innovating, ” he says.
What truly sets the Dufour 41 apart is its unique design. “ The Dufour 41 stands out for its very wide hull at the front, inspired by offshore racing boats, while remaining balanced and high-performance, ” emphasizes Nicolas Bérenger. Furthermore, it is the only boat of this size to offer four real cabins , thanks to its optimized hull.
The cockpit, 15% larger than the previous model, offers ample outdoor space, thus meeting the expectations of modern boaters in terms of comfort and ergonomics.
